Dr. Hayden Thomas
Dr. Hayden Thomas was born October 8th, 1935. He was educated at the Willikies Government School, Antigua and the former Faith and Hope High School from which he graduated with the University of Cambridge Senior School Certificate. He obtained the Bachelor of Science Degree in Chemistry from the University of the West Indies (U.W.I) in 1965, the Master of Science in Food Technology from the University of Reading, England in 1973 and the Doctor of Philosophy degree in Food Science from the University of London, England in 1981. He also holds a Certificate in Management from the University of Connecticut in the United States of America (U.S.A.). He has attended many courses and seminars in the Caribbean, United Kingdom (UK), U.S.A., Latin America, Switzerland and Austria and has represented Antigua and Barbuda at several conferences world-wide. He was the Government’s Chief Chemist and Food Technologist for many years during which time he was engaged in Analytical Chemistry and carried out science research and development work.
Dr. Thomas has served on several local boards and Committees. He has also served as the Caribbean’s representative on the Organization of American Sates (O.A.S.) Inter-American Committee on Science and Technology with headquarters in Washington D.C., and was a member of the Technical Advisory Committee of the Caribbean Regional Drug Testing Laboratory. He served for many years as a member of the Editorial Board of the International Journal “Food Science” published by Elsevier Applied Science, UK.
Dr. Thomas worked as part time Science Teacher at the Antigua Grammar School and the U.W.I. Extramural department and supervised the Universities of Cambridge and London G.C.E. Practical Examinations in Chemistry and Physics. He worked, too, as a Consultant Chemist and served for two (2) years as a member of the Board of Directors of the Antigua Commercial Bank.
Dr. Thomas received the National Order of Honour Award ibn 1988 and was made a Companion of the Most Distinguished Order of St. Michael and St. George (C.G.M.) by the Queen in 1995.
He is married to Dr. Gloria Thomas and is the Captain of the 6th Antigua Company of the Boys’ Brigade and is a member of the Antigua Scouts Council.
He was appointed by Parliament as Antigua and Barbuda’s first Ombudsman in June, 1995 and demitted office in October, 2006.
